Rules and Regulations

1. General Information

Qeshm Geoparktrail Race, is a trail running race, takes place every year around 10th of February in Qeshm island, Persian Gulf, Iran.
Geoparktrail starts from Salakh village, passes through several villages of western part of the island and ends at Salakh village again.
The race has two distances: 30 km with the elevation gain of +450m and 70km with the elevation of +1100m.
The race starts on February 10, 2019 at 6:30 in Salakh village.
Participants should finish the 30km route under 5hours and the 70km route under 12hours in a semi-sufficient way, i.e. they should carry equipment that is necessary to ensure the safety of their run for possible weather conditions.

2. Participation

The event is open to anyone aged 18 and over who are in possession of a valid medical certificate, which is valid on February 10, 2019 and indicates that the person can participate to long distance runs. This document will be checked by the organization before the race. Considering the mountainous terrain of the route, previous trail/mountain running experience is strongly recommended.

3. Registration

a) Registration procedure
Only registered runners can participate to the event.
The maximum number of participants is 500 for 30km race and 100 for 70km race, and registration will be open until January 30, 2019. Please see the registration section for more details.
A registration cannot be transferred, and organization will not allow another person to run on behalf of a registered participant.

b) Registration fee
The registration fee is 50 USD for Geoparktrail 2019, (same fee for 30km and 70km)
Registration fee includes:
Race bib
Timing
Race t-shirt
Finishers medals
Assistance and refreshments along the route
Pasta party after the race
Refreshments after the race

c) Cancellation
in case of cancellation no fees will be Registration cancellation
No refund of the registration fee will be made should the race be cancelled or interrupted due to reasons beyond the control of the organization, such as bad weather conditions.

4. Distribution of Race Packs

Race packs including the race bibs will be distributed at the registration area, in Salakh village, on febraury 9, 2019 from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. Location of the registration area is available at https://goo.gl/maps/Hjwv65Kacoq

5. Race Start

The race starts on February 10, 2019 at 6:30 at Salakh village. Participants are required to be at the start area at least 30 minutes in advance, i.e. before 6:00.
There will be a bag deposit. The deposited bags can be retrieved at the end of the race by showing the race bib. The Organization cannot be held responsible for any items left unattended in or outside of the bag deposit area.

6. Race Route

Geoparktrail2019 starts from Salakh village, passes from Tandis valley, Roof of Qeshm, Doorbani village, Gouran village, Gambron village and ends at Salakh village.
Most of the route is on wide trails with soil terrain. Depending on the seasonal conditions there may some rain water ponds on the way
The route will be marked with reflective bands and other means. Any departures from the official route entails disqualification.

7. Environmental Awareness

The race takes place in an important protected area of Iran with a delicate natural ecosystem. Participants are therefore required to fully respect the natural environment, in particular by not throwing away rubbish, and harm the natural habitat. Acting otherwise shall lead to disqualification. In order to reduce the amount of garbage, there won’t be any plastic cups at the refreshment points. Participants are required to carry their own drinking cups or water bottles.
Permanent marking will not be done. All marking flags will be collected after the race.

8. Health and Safety

In case of bad weather conditions, such as dense fog or storm, the organization reserves the right to make last minute changes in order to prevent potential hazards or difficult conditions for the participants. This may include suspending or cancelling the race, or making modifications to the route. The participants should obey these decisions. Any changes will be announced to the participants before the race, or at refreshment points during the race.
Medical and search-rescue teams will be present at the main refreshment stations and important points determined by the organization. Their exact location will be announced before the race. Medical and search-rescue personnel can check the participants during the race and decide to stop their race if deemed necessary for health reasons. The participants should obey these decisions.

9. Mandatory Equipment

During the race, the participants are obliged to carry the mandatory items listed below:

30k race:
Race bib (should be visible all times)
Whistle
Water bottle with a capacity of at least 1 L (should be full before leaving the stations)
Cup (there won’t be plastic cups at refreshment points)

60k race:

Race bib (should be visible all times)
Whistle
Emergency blanket
Water bottle with a capacity of at least 1 L (should be full before leaving the stations)
Cup ( there won’t be plastic cups at refreshment points)
Water proof jacket
Head lamp
mobile phone

These may be checked before distributing the race bib and at any point during the race. Participants without any of the mandatory items shall be disqualified and will not be allowed to continue the race.
In addition to the list above, it is strongly recommended to carry the following material:
Food (e.g. energy gels or bars)
Sun glasses
Sun cream
Poles
Cap, hat or bandana
Head lamp with spare batteries
First aid kit
Participants running with poles should carry them from start to finish; they cannot leave the poles as any intermediate point.

10. Disqualification and Time Penalties

The following actions lead to immediate disqualification from the race:
Not passing from any of the checkpoints.
Taking a short cut or using a vehicle.
Getting support except at designated refreshment points.
Failing to help a participant in difficulty.
Throwing away rubbish or harming the natural habitat.
Rejecting to be checked by the medical personnel.
Not obeying the decisions given by the medical personnel or organization.
Not carrying the mandatory items, or rejecting their check by the organization.
Disqualified participant will not be allowed to continue the race.
For participants running with poles, leaving them at an intermediate point before finish is subject to 1 hour time penalty.

11. Results

Partial results during and the official results after the race will be announced at geoparktrail.com web site.
Results will be ranked in the following categories:

Men/Women Overall

12. Prizes

GeoparkTrail
The first 3 participants of the men and women will be awarded with non-cash prizes.
Each participant who completed the race within the maximum time limit will be given a finisher medal and t-shirt.

13. Rights of Visual Material Use

The participants authorize the Organization to freely use any images and videos depicting them during the event.

14. Waiver of Responsibility

Voluntary registration and subsequent participation in Qeshm Geopraktrail 2019 Race indicates full acceptance of the rules and any changes they may have to undergo. By registering, the participant exempts the organizers from any liability, whether civil or criminal, for damage to persons and/or property caused by or to him/her.

This race takes place in the heart of unique area of Qeshm Geopark.
It is the only Geopark in the Middle-East that has been registered by the Global Network of Geoparks (GGN), based on it’s abundant natural resources and unique landscapes, especially exceptional geological formations.

 

How to travel to Qeshm Island?

1. Flights
you can reach Qeshm Island by domestic flights from Tehran or Shiraz, and international flights from Dubai.

2. Train
you can reach Qeshm Island, taking the train from Tehran or Shiraz ( or any major city of Iran ) to Bandar Abass. Then you need to take the ferries from Bandar abbas to Qeshm.

We recommend staying in local houses and Eco lodges available in different villages of the west part of the Island.  (Where the race takes place)
